Mendis was born in Ragama on October 25, the eldest of three siblings. Sriyantha Mendis' grandfather Hiddadura Juan Mendis was a devout Catholic. The actor balances films and teledramas as his profession. His wife Kusum Renu is a well known actress. After completing his education, Mendis teamed up with fellow actor Senaka Perera to produce a stage play, Eliza. He completed his education at De Masenod College, Kandana.
He excelled in karate during his school days.His first teaching appointment was at Pokuwagonna Maha Vidyalaya, Ganewatta, far from Polgahawela, Kurunegala. On July 7, 1979, he became a science teacher at St. Bernadette's College, Polgahawela. He later completed 32 years as a teacher in several schools islandwide.
